Ham And Cheese Sliders With Poppy Seeds
The Hawaiian slider buns are topped with a buttery poppy seed glaze that bakes into a crispy, golden-brown crust while keeping the inside soft and warm.
Deli ham adds a salty, smoky, slightly sweet contrast to the 3 layers of good melted cheese making each bite hearty and comforting.
Take your game day parties to another level serving hot ham and cheese sliders with chips or pretzels along with onion dip, million dollar dip or with tortilla chips and my white queso dip.
Ingredients
- 16 sweet rolls – I used Hawaiian slider rolls
- 1-pound package of deli ham – I like to use honey ham or black forest ham
- 8 slices of white cheddar cheese
- 8 slices of provolone cheese
- 8 slices of Swiss cheese
Hawaiian slider rolls topping:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter – melted
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
Substitutions: The 3 flavors of cheese I used go very well together. You can try other cheese combinations like Colby Jack, Sharp cheddar and Gouda or for extra creamy cheese try Havarti, mozzarella and American.
How To Make Extra Cheesy Hot Ham And Cheese Sliders
Step One – Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step Two – Cut individual rolls almost in half, I stop cutting right before I reach the opposite side so the top is still attached to the bottom. Continue until all the rolls are cut.
Step Three – Next is the first layer of cheese. Take the cheddar cheese and cut 8 slices in half (giving you 16 half slices). Place one half slice on the bottom of each sweet roll (I prefer to fold the half slices in half one more time, so they fit on the slider buns better). Continue until all the sweet rolls have a layer of cheddar cheese.
Step Four – Now take the deli ham and pull two slices out. Fold them up and place them so they fit on top of the cheddar cheese. Repeat until all the sandwiches have deli ham.
Step Five – Repeat step 2, but with the Swiss cheese. Place this cheese on top of the deli ham and continue until every sandwich has Swiss cheese.
Step Six – Repeat step 2 with the third cheese, provolone. Place this cheese on top of the Swiss cheese.
Step Seven – Once you have filled the sweet rolls with meat and cheese, gently push the top down to prepare for the topping mixture.
Step Eight – In a small bowl, mix up all the ingredients in the topping mixture recipe.
Step Nine – Slowly spoon the topping onto all the ham and cheese sliders. It is ok for the topping to roll down the sides. Continue until each slider has been covered with the topping mixture.
Step Ten – Place foil over all the sliders to prevent the top from getting too brown when cooked.
Step Eleven – Place in oven and cook for 15 minutes. Keep the foil on for the first 10 minutes, then remove for the last 5 minutes for the top to get toasted. If you prefer not to have the top toasted, you can keep the foil on the entire cook time.
Step Twelve – Remove the ham and cheese sliders from the oven once the timer goes off and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Can I Make These Sliders Ahead Of Time?
Yes! These sandwiches can be made up to a day ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Extend the cook time slightly to make sure the cheese is melted and place foil on top to keep the top from burning with the extra cook time.
Sandra’s Tips
- Deli ham varies in thickness quite a bit. The thicker the ham, the longer it takes to heat all the way through, so keep that in mind. I tend to buy thinner deli ham to make sure all the ham is hot on my sandwiches, plus it is easier to fold and place on the sweet rolls. If you do go with a thicker deli ham, just make sure to cook them long enough for all the ham to be hot (and place foil over the top, so they don’t get too dark).
- You don’t have to make this in a casserole dish. I have also made this recipe and cooked it on a baking sheet. If you prefer softer sandwiches, a casserole dish is better (since it retains more moisture). If you prefer the outside of your slider to be crispy, then you may like to try cooking it on a baking sheet. Just remember to still cover it with foil.
Storage And Reheating Instructions
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
Reheat in a preheated 350°F oven in a baking dish covered with foil to prevent them from drying out for 10 to 15 minutes or until warm through. Remove the foil in the last few minutes if you want the tops to be crispier.
