Best baked sweet potato in the oven
Oven-baked sweet potatoes with 3 ingredients is one of our go to recipes that we enjoy for a hassle-free and fast, nutritious side dish for dinner.
Such a simple recipe that goes with so many main courses from chicken dinners, meatloaf to beef roasts like my tri-tip recipe.
Sweet potatoes are a great compliment to baked potatoes or a wonderful substitute to change things up for dinner.
Great with my Mississippi pot roast, crock pot Mississippi chicken, dutch oven chicken, fried chicken, chicken kabobs, sweet cornbread, Mexican cornbread and oven baked chicken thighs.
Ingredients
- Sweet Potatoes – 5 large sweet potatoes or use how many you need, rinse and scrub off any dirt and debris and dry
- Avocado Oil – has a higher smoke point than olive oil for baking at higher temperatures or use butter if your prefer
- Salt – I like to use a course mineral packed salt for flavor but use what you have on hand
Baked Sweet Potato Optional Toppings
- Buttler Slices – goes so well with the soft cooked sweet potatoes
- Honey Butter – try my honey butter it’s so good on sweet potatoes
- Chives – for a mild, fresh onion flavor
- Sour Cream – creamy topping that goes great with chives or bacon
- Greek Yogurt
- Candied Pecans – my recipe is amazing for a sweet crunch on sweet potatoes
- Bacon – chopped cooked bacon or bacon bits
- Black Beans or Pork & Beans
How to bake the perfect sweet potatoes
STEP ONE – Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
STEP TWO – Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes to remove any dirt, then dry them.
STEP THREE – Using a dinner fork, poke holes around each potato then place it onto the prepared baking tray.
STEP FOUR – If eating the skin and you want to crisp it, rub a little oil over each one and then sprinkle it with salt. You can use additional seasonings if desired.
STEP FIVE – Bake the potatoes for 40-50 minutes, or until fork-tender. If more time is needed, cook 5 minutes and check again.
STEP SIX – Once the potatoes reach the desired tenderness, slice them with a knife lengthwise and gently spread it apart.
STEP SEVEN – Serve with slices of butter, sour cream or greek yogurt, and garnish with chives if desired. Enjoy!
Sandra’s Tips
- I used parchment paper to line the baking sheet and the potato skins did not burn or stick
- Poking holes in the sweet potatoes before baking is common but it is up to you if you want to do it as it allows the steam to escape to stop the potato skin from tearing.
- Try to use sweet potatoes that are similar in size so they finish cooking at the same time
Storage and reheating instructions
Once cooled store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Store any toppings separately in own containers.
Reheat in a microwave-safe dish in the microwave with 30 second intervals until heated through.
