We enjoy sweet potato recipes all year long but we always look forward to having sweet potato casseroles on our holiday table with a roasted turkey or a holiday brown sugar ham.

I am not sure which sweet potato casserole recipes is our favourite, this baked sweet potato with marshmallows or sweet potato casserole no marshmallows.

When I eat Thanksgiving sweet potatoes casserole with marshmallows I think ok this is the best one, it is so good! Then I eat the Paula Deen’s sweet potato casserole without marshmallows and streusel topping at Christmas and I think yes, it is the best sweet potato casserole recipe.

Ok so maybe we just love sweet potato casserole with fresh sweet potatoes for the holiday season. It has become a tradition to have it on our table like it is for many families along with green bean casserole and corn casserole with cheese.

Sweet potato recipe with brown sugar and marshmallows is the recipe we have made and we have made a lot them! We love how the toasted marshmallows melt into the sweet potato and then you get the texture of the crunchy roasted pecans for more flavour bursts.

  • Sweet Potatoes – fresh sweet potatoes

  • Brown Sugar
  • Cinnamon

Substitutions for old fashioned sweet potatoes with marshmallows

Sweet potato marshmallow recipes can be made with fresh sweet potatoes or canned sweet potatoes.

To make canned sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, substitute the canned sweet potatoes for the fresh ones.

You can also substitute in walnuts for the pecans if you prefer.

Can you substitute sweet potatoes for yams in sweet potato recipes?

No! They are not interchangeable in recipes. Yams and sweet potatoes have different tastes, textures and do not cook in recipes the same way.

Step by step instructions for how to make sweet potato casserole with marshmallows

STEP ONE – Preheat the oven to 375°F.  Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Set aside.

STEP TWO – Place the sweet potatoes in a pot. Cover with water. Boil until fork-tender.  (7 to 12 minutes).  Turn off the heat and drain the potatoes.

STEP THREE – Add the butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, pepper and vanilla extract.

STEP FOUR – Mix with a hand mixer for 2 to 3 minutes, or until smooth and creamy.

STEP FIVE – Taste to see if any additional sugar or salt is needed. 

Pecans are added to sweet potato mixture.

STEP SIX – Add 1 cup of the pecans to the potatoes. Mix with a spoon until combined.

STEP SEVEN – Transfer the potatoes to the prepared baking dish.

Marshmallows and pecans are sprinkled on top of sseet potato mixture in baking dish.

STEP EIGHT – Top with the marshmallows and the remainder of the pecans.

STEP NINE – Bake for 23 minutes. 

STEP TEN – Turn the oven to broil at high for 1 minute, or until the marshmallows are golden brown.

You can also store the leftovers by scooping out the sweet potato and marshmallows into an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. This is a good option if you cannot fit the baking dish in your fridge or you do not have a lot left.

Can you freeze sweet potato casserole marshmallow recipe?

Yes you can! Freeze the casserole without the marshmallow topping wrapped tightly in foil for 2 months. Or freeze in a freezer-safe container for 2 months. If you freeze with the marshmallow topping on top the casserole topping will come out mushy.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cup pecans, chopped, divided
  • 4 cups miniature marshmallow

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2.  Grease a 9×13 baking dish with the stick of butter. Set aside.

3.  Place the sweet potatoes in a pot. Cover with water. Boil under fork tender. Boil for 7-12  minutes. Drain the potatoes and return to the pot. Turn off the heat.

4.  Add the butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, pepper, and vanilla extract.

5.  Mix with a hand mixer for 2-3 minutes or until smooth and creamy.

7.  Taste to see if any additional sugar or salt is needed.

6.  Add 1 cup of the pecans to the potatoes. Mix with a spoon until combined.

8.  Transfer the potatoes to the prepared baking dish.

9.  Top with the marshmallows and the remainder of the pecans.

10. Bake for 12 minutes.

11. Turn the oven to broil at high or 375°F for 1 minute or until the marshmallows are golden brown.
