Barbecue chicken sliders on Hawaiian rolls

Soft, fluffy and slightly sweet Hawaiian rolls are the preferred rolls to use when making sliders and pair so well with barbecue sauce. You will love how the flavors blend together and the cheese melts into everything.

They are quick to make for dinner or a crowd pleasing appetizer that everyone will love!! I love to make them ahead of time and bake right before our quests arrive.

Ingredients

  • Chicken – I used a 1 1/2 pound rotisserie chicken shredded and seasoned with salt and pepper to speed up the prep time it is perfect for this recipe
  • Barbecue Sauce – use your favourite bbq sauce
  • Hawaiian Rolls – 12 Hawaiian rolls sliced
  • Butter – salted butter melted
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Garlic Powder
  • Provolone Cheese
  • Red Onion – thinly sliced
  • Dried Minced Onion – seasoning
  • Parsley – garnish on top

Substitutions

You can use any kind of cheese you like. Popular chicken slider cheese that melt well to use are mozzarella, gouda, cheddar cheese and pepper jack cheese.

Make your own seasoned chicken or use leftover chicken in this recipe instead of the rotisserie chicken.

How to make bbq chicken sliders recipe

STEP ONE – Preheat the oven to 350° F. 

STEP TWO – In a bowl add the chicken and barbecue sauce. Mix until combined. Set aside. 

STEP THREE – In a bowl add the butter, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder.  Mix until combined. Set aside. 

STEP FOUR – Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

STEP FIVE – Place the bottom of the Hawaiian rolls on the baking sheet. 

STEP SIX – Layer the rolls with 6 slices of cheese. 

STEP SEVEN – Top the cheese with the chicken. 

STEP EIGHT- Top the chicken with the red onion.

STEP NINE – Top the chicken with 6 more slices of cheese.

STEP TEN – Place the tops of the rolls on top. With a pastry brush cover the tops with the garlic butter. 

STEP ELEVEN – Sprinkle the dried minced onion on top. 

STEP TWELVE – Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the sliders are heated through and the cheese has melted. Sprinkle parsley on top and serve.

Variations

You can add crispy cooked bacon to the sliders. Spice it up with jalapeños and a spicy bbq sauce.

  • Delicious served with a creamy coleslaw
  • Choose the right bbq sauce for you whether it’s sweet, tangy, smoky or spicy
  • Make them ahead of time and bake just before you are ready to serve as they are best enjoyed warm from the oven

Storage and reheating instructions

Store any leftover chicken sliders in the fridge using an airtight container for 3 or 4 days.

Reheat in a 350°F oven covered with foil on a baking sheet for 8 to10 minutes. Remove the foil to let the buns toast for another 2 minutes.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pound chicken, shredded and seasoned with salt and pepper

1 cup barbecue sauce

1/4 cup salted butter, melted

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon garlic powder

12 Hawaiian rolls, sliced

12 slices provolone cheese

1/2 cup red onion, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon dried minced onion

1 tablespoon parsley


Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350° F. 

In a bowl add the chicken and barbecue sauce. Mix until combined. Set aside. 

In a bowl add the butter, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder.  Mix until combined. Set aside. 

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place the bottom of the Hawaiian rolls on the baking sheet. 

Layer the rolls with 6 slices of cheese. 

Top the cheese with the chicken. 

Top the chicken with the red onion.

Top the chicken with 6 more slices of cheese.

Place the tops of the rolls on top. With a pastry brush cover the tops with the garlic butter.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the sliders are heated through and the cheese has melted.
