Hummus ingredients

Labelled ingredients for hummus recipe.
  • Chickpeas – 2 (15-once) cans of chickpeas drained well, is the base for hummus
  • Tahini – (ground sesame seeds) provides a savory flavor and creaminess to the hummus
  • Lemon Juice – provides a bright acidity to the hummus, fresh squeezed lemon juice is best as the bottled lemon juice can lend a mettalic flavor
  • Olive Oil – adds a richness and helps to give it a smooth creamy texture
  • Garlic Cloves – adds a mild garlic flavor without being overpowering
  • Salt – adds seasoning
  • Cumin – common hummus ingredient adding a slight smoky flavor
  • Cayenne Pepper – (optional) adds a subtle heat and depth of flavor to the hummus

Hummus garnish (optional)

  • Olive Oil
  • Chickpeas – 10 or 12 reserved whole chickpeas
  • Cumin
  • Parsley – minced for a garnish
  • Cayenne Pepper – (optional)

Handy tip: Extra Smooth Hummus

For a smoother consistency to your hummus the chickpeas can have their outer skin removed. To remove the skin place them in a bowl of warm water. Working with 1 – 2 tablespoons of chickpeas at a time gently rub them between your hands removing the skin. Place in a separate bowl until finished, this will add to the prep time.

Substitutions and additions

You can make this hummus without tahini by not using it or substituting it with nut butters like cashew or almond. Be aware that this will provide a different flavor to the hummus as tahini is a traditional hummus ingredient.

Use your favorite hummus ingredients like roasted red bell peppers, roasted beets or pumpkin purée by adding them into your hummus mixture.

You can garnish it with olive oil also using roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, fresh herbs and toasted pine nuts or almonds.
