The combination of flavors in this green bean casserole is SO good and it’s so easy to make. You could easily prepare this recipe a day or two ahead of time and then reheat it.

The crunchy French’s fried onions on top are a must for making a French onion green bean casserole on your Christmas table!

This recipe uses simple ingredients, some of which you may already have in your pantry.

  • Chicken stock
  • Fresh green beans
  • Butter
  • Fresh mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • French’s French fried onions
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt & black pepper

Substitutions

You can use frozen green beans in your green bean casserole as a substitute for fresh green beans. Also make your own crispy fried onions in a frying pan dredged in flour with spices instead of the French’s fried onions.

This green bean casserole with cheese can made using the mild or sharp cheddar of your choice and even velveeta cheese. You can use crumbled ritz crackers on top of your green bean casserole instead of the fried onions or both.

Make green bean casserole with no mushroom soup by substituting with chicken cream of soup. Substitute a few cloves of fresh chopped garlic for the garlic powder.

Step by step Instructions for how to cook green bean casserole

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease an 2-quart baking dish.

In a large pot, bring 3 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Add green beans and boil in chicken broth for 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Mushroom and onions in cast iron skillet with a few pats of butter.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt butter and add in sliced mushrooms and chopped onions. Sauté until tender, about 5 to 7 minutes.

Green beans, mushroom mixture, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions in skillet.

To the skillet, add green beans, cream of mushroom soup and 1/3 cup of the French fried onions. Stir to combine.

Spread mixture in prepared 2 quart baking dish.

How long to cook this green bean casserole?

Bake in 350°F oven for 20 minutes.

Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and continue cooking for 10 more minutes.

Description

Fresh green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce, topped with shredded cheddar and crispy French’s onion rings, this classic holiday side dish is a must for every holiday dinner.


Ingredients

1/3 cup butter

1/2 cup diced onion

1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms

2 cups sliced fresh green beans

3 cups chicken broth

1 10-1/4 oz. can cream of mushroom soup

1 2.8 oz. can French’s Fried Onion Rings

Pinch salt and pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 cup grated Cheddar cheese


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
