Apple Dump Cake With 3 Ingredients

Apple dump cake is a crowd-pleasing recipe that’s perfect for potlucks, family gatherings, or holiday dinners, and it pairs wonderfully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

As it bakes the apples become tender and sweet, pairing so well with the buttery cinnamon spices of the cake mix making it reminiscent of apple pie but without the extra work.

This quick and easy apple dessert is delicious served warm with a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream with an optional caramel drizzle to top it off.

Ingredients

  • Apple Pie Filling – can of apple pie filling
  • Spice Cake Mix – box of spice cake mix or use a white or yellow cake mix
  • Butter – use cold salted or unsalted butter as they both work in this recipe

Substitutions & Variations: White cake mix or yellow cake mix work also well in this recipe. Spice cake mix complements the flavor of the apples, but you can add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the yellow or white cake mixes if you can’t find a spice cake mix. Try it with blueberry pie filling or peach pie filling.

How To Make Apple Dump Cake

STEP ONE – Preheat oven to 350°F.

STEP TWO – Pour the two cans of apple pie filling into the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish or pan, and spread it out evenly.

STEP THREE – Sprinkle all of the box cake mix on top of the apple pie filling, covering the apples evenly.

STEP FOUR – Slice the butter into 16-20 thin slices (or pats), and place them in a single layer over the cake mix.

STEP FIVE – Bake the cake for 1 hour or until the pie filling starts to bubble around the edges and the cake is golden brown on top.

STEP SIX – Let the cake rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with ice cream, if desired and caramel sauce (optional).

Baking Tips

Start checking the cake around 45-50 minutes to see if it’s done. It’s okay if there are some parts of the cake mix that are powdery where the butter didn’t reach. It will still be safe to eat because it was baked through.

Storage And Reheating Instructions

Store in the fridge in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap for up to 2 days as the cake layer may get too soggy after that.

Reheat the apple cake in the oven at 350°F for 20 to 30 minutes or reheat individual servings in the microwave.

You can freeze the dessert by wrapping it in plastic wrap and foil to freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and follow the reheating instructions.

1 (15.25-ounce) box spice cake mix

14 tablespoons butter, cold
