Ingredients & Substitutions for cheesy tater tot casserole with chicken
This recipe uses simple ingredients that you can find in the grocery store with easy subsitutions and you can make it your own adding your version of veggies.
- cream of mushroom soup
- cream of chicken soup
- chicken broth – you may also substitute 1/2 cup milk or sour cream. Still the same great creamy sauce. Any of these will thin the sauce so that it’s a nice creamy consistency.
- garlic powder – convenient to use, or you can also use 1 clove of chopped garlic.
- onion powder – you ‘can’ substitute onion here but I would sautรฉ half an onion in a bit of olive oil until transluscent if substituting.
- cooked chicken – several options here. You can use poached chicken breasts (cubed), rotisserie chicken, leftover chicken. I poached four small boneless chicken breasts for this recipe. Any shredded chicken or cubed chicken will work here!
- frozen mixed vegetables – the sky’s the limit. Use your favorites.
- salt & black pepper
- cheddar cheese, shredded – I like to use sharp cheddar cheese or you can also substitute pepper jack cheese and monterey jack cheeses.
- frozen tater tots
- optional parsley or green onions for garnish
Can I use canned vegetables instead of frozen vegetables?
Absolutely! Replace them and be sure to drain any liquid from the canned vegetables.

In a large bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, garlic powder, onion powder and chicken broth.
Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Spread the chicken mixture into to the prepared casserole dish. Smooth it out evenly with a spatula, then top with an even layer of frozen tater tots.
Bake in 400ยฐF oven for 40 minutes. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until heated through and tater tots are lightly browned and crispy.

Tips for the Best Chicken Tater Tot Casserole
Make it your own! This recipe is adaptable to any vegetables, frozen or cooked fresh vegetables. You can also change up the types of cheese.
For super-crispy Tater tots, broil them for three to four minutes when the casserole is done cooking.
Taste before seasoning with salt & pepper. You can buy low-sodium cream soup and then add salt. You may find that you don’t need to add salt with regular cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup. I always recommend pepper though.
Storage and Reheating Instructions
Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Cover casserole dish with plastic wrap, or transfer leftovers to an airtight container.
To reheat, place the leftover tater tot chicken casserole in a preheated 350ยฐF oven in an oven-safe baking dish. Cover with foil and reheat for 15 to 20 minutes. Set the oven to broil for two to three minutes once heated through for crispy tater tots.
Can I freeze tater tot casserole?
Yes, you can freeze tater tot casserole. Assemble following the recipe directions but do no bake the casserole. Wrap in plastic wrap and a layer of aluminum foil. You can freeze the casserole for up to three months.
To cook, thaw completely in the refrigerator overnight, then cook according to directions.
I created a resource for how to reheat a casserole for any other additional questions.
What should I serve with Tater Tot Casserole?
Although this chicken tater tot casserole can be a meal in itself, if you’re feeding a crowd, you might like to add some side dishes.
Serve with your favorite green salad, garlic bread or roasted vegetables. You can also whip up an extra batch of tater tots in the air fryer!
Air fryer twice baked potatoes would be another great choice.

Love this easy to make chicken tater tot casserole. We love tater tots so it’s great to enjoy them in a casserole. So easy for dinner and to have leftovers the next night is so amazing and convenient. Thanks!
My husband and I enjoyed this, and actually omitted the chicken and used more vegetables. A quick but filling weeknight dinner that’s very similar to pot pie. Even with omitting the salt and using reduced sodium condensed soup it tasted a bit salty, so be mindful of that if you’re watching your sodium intake.
