Ingredients & Substitutions for cheesy tater tot casserole with chicken

This recipe uses simple ingredients that you can find in the grocery store with easy subsitutions and you can make it your own adding your version of veggies.

Labelled ingredients for tater tot casserole with chicken and vegetables.
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • cream of chicken soup
  • chicken broth – you may also substitute 1/2 cup milk or sour cream. Still the same great creamy sauce. Any of these will thin the sauce so that it’s a nice creamy consistency.
  • garlic powder – convenient to use, or you can also use 1 clove of chopped garlic.
  • onion powder – you ‘can’ substitute onion here but I would sauté half an onion in a bit of olive oil until transluscent if substituting.
  • cooked chicken – several options here. You can use poached chicken breasts (cubed), rotisserie chicken, leftover chicken. I poached four small boneless chicken breasts for this recipe. Any shredded chicken or cubed chicken will work here!
  • frozen mixed vegetables – the sky’s the limit. Use your favorites.
  • salt & black pepper
  • cheddar cheese, shredded – I like to use sharp cheddar cheese or you can also substitute pepper jack cheese and monterey jack cheeses.
  • frozen tater tots
  • optional parsley or green onions for garnish

Can I use canned vegetables instead of frozen vegetables?

Absolutely! Replace them and be sure to drain any liquid from the canned vegetables.

Both cream soups and chicken broth in bowl with wooden spoon.

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

In a large bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, garlic powder, onion powder and chicken broth.

Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Chicken and frozen vegetables are added to soup mixture in bowl.

Mixture is transferred to 9x13-inch baking dish with tater tots in single row on top.

Spread the chicken mixture into to the prepared casserole dish. Smooth it out evenly with a spatula, then top with an even layer of frozen tater tots.

Shredded cheese is sprinkled on top of the tater tots in 9x13-inch baking dish.

Bake in 400°F oven for 40 minutes. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until heated through and tater tots are lightly browned and crispy.

No! Add them right to the soup mixture and bake as directed. The frozen vegetables will cook in the soup mixture.

Tips for the Best Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

Make it your own! This recipe is adaptable to any vegetables, frozen or cooked fresh vegetables. You can also change up the types of cheese.

For super-crispy Tater tots, broil them for three to four minutes when the casserole is done cooking.

Taste before seasoning with salt & pepper. You can buy low-sodium cream soup and then add salt. You may find that you don’t need to add salt with regular cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup. I always recommend pepper though.

  1. Love this easy to make chicken tater tot casserole. We love tater tots so it’s great to enjoy them in a casserole. So easy for dinner and to have leftovers the next night is so amazing and convenient. Thanks!

  2. My husband and I enjoyed this, and actually omitted the chicken and used more vegetables. A quick but filling weeknight dinner that’s very similar to pot pie. Even with omitting the salt and using reduced sodium condensed soup it tasted a bit salty, so be mindful of that if you’re watching your sodium intake.
