The best flavors of the original philly cheesesteak recipe come together with these simple ingredients:

Shopping List:

  • 2 cups Bisquick baking mix (combined with 1 cup water)
  • 1 and 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 medum onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cups cream cheese, cubed
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (we like sharp cheddar)
  • Salt & black pepper (to taste)

Substitutions

Ground beef – I like to use extra-lean ground beef, but you can use any ground beef that you like. Just be sure to drain off the fat from it once it is cooked.

Peppers – For the peppers, you can also use red or yellow peppers and the mushrooms we used were white button mushrooms but I often substitute cremini mushrooms.

Cheese – I like to use a combo of provolone and cheddar cheese, or you can use any of the best cheese for melting such as mozzarella cheese and most types of cheddar.

Onions – I like to use yellow cooking onions or white onions. Vidalia oniona are sweet and delicious. Although fresh onions are best, in a pinch you could substitute 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of onion powder.

Chopped green pepper, mushrooms and onions on a wooden board.

Can I substitute steak for the Ground Beef?

Yes. Simply substitute 1 and 1/2 pounds of sliced or shaved steak, such as ribeye steak and proceed with cooking as in directions. Cook until steak is cooked through. Add in 1/2 cup of beef broth with the cream cheese to make a more saucy mixture.
