    Ingredients & Substitutions

A quick visit to the grocery store and you can find all of the simple ingredients need for this great dinner recipe.

Labelled ingredients for philly cheesesteak casserole with text overlay.

The best flavors of the original philly cheesesteak recipe come together with these simple ingredients:

    Shopping List:

    • 2 cups Bisquick baking mix (combined with 1 cup water)
    • 1 and ½ pounds ground beef
    • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 medum onion, chopped
    • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
    • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • ¾ cups cream cheese, cubed
    • 8 slices provolone cheese
    • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (we like sharp cheddar)
    • Salt & black pepper (to taste)

    Substitutions

Ground beef - I like to use extra-lean ground beef, but you can use any ground beef that you like. Just be sure to drain off the fat from it once it is cooked.

Peppers - For the peppers, you can also use red or yellow peppers and the mushrooms we used were white button mushrooms but I often substitute cremini mushrooms.

Cheese - I like to use a combo of provolone and cheddar cheese, or you can use any of the best cheese for melting such as mozzarella cheese and most types of cheddar.

Onions - I like to use yellow cooking onions or white onions. Vidalia oniona are sweet and delicious. Although fresh onions are best, in a pinch you could substitute 1 and ½ teaspoons of onion powder.

Chopped green pepper, mushrooms and onions on a wooden board.

Can I substitute steak for the Ground Beef?

Yes. Simply substitute 1 and ½ pounds of sliced or shaved steak, such as ribeye steak and proceed with cooking as in directions. Cook until steak is cooked through. Add in ½ cup of beef broth with the cream cheese to make a more saucy mixture.

Step by Step Instructions - How to make Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

You can find a full printable recipe card with instructions at the bottom of this page. I've included some visuals below to help you along the way.

I love how quickly this recipe comes together. Start by chopping the garlic, onions, peppers and mushrooms. Having them ready will make cooking a breeze.

Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and preheat the oven to 350°F.

Bisquick mix in a mixing bowl.

In a large mixing bowl, stir together the bisquick with 1 cup of water. The mixture will thicken if you let it sit for a minute.

Biquick mix has been mixed with 1 cup of water and spread into the bottom of 9x13-inch baking dish.

Spread the biscuit mixture in the bottom of prepared casserole dish. Drop it by dollops into the four corners, then a few in the middle and try to spread out evenly with a butter knife or spatula.

Garlic, onion, mushroom and green peppers in large skillet with olive oil.

I like to cook the veggies separate from the ground beef so that I can drain off the fat in the ground beef. Alternatively, you can cook them all together and still drain off any fat.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sauté onion mushroom, peppers and garlic until softened, about 4 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a small bowl and set aside.

Cooked vegetables are added to the cooked ground beef in large skillet.

Cook the ground beef until completely cooked and no longer pink inside. Drain off the excess grease, then stir in the cooked veggies.

Cubed cream cheese is added to the ground beef and vegetable mixture in skillet.

Stir the Worcestershire sauce into the ground beef mixture, followed by the cubed softened cream cheese, over medium heat. Stir gently until the cream cheese is completely melted into the ground beef. Taste and add salt and pepper to taste.

Ground beef mixture with cream cheese is spread on top of the biscuit crust.

Spread the meat and vegetable mixture on top of the biscuit layer.

Top with the 8 slices of provolone cheese, followed by a sprinkle of the shredded cheddar cheese.

in 350°F oven for 30 minutes. I sometimes set the broiler on for two minutes at the end of the cook time and the cheese melts to a bubbly perfection and the tips golden brown.

This easy casserole recipe is delicious served a side of my cheesy stuffed garlic bread and these air fryer twice baked potatoes!

Slice, or helping of Philly casserole on a plate with fresh parsley.

    Storage, Freezing & Reheating Instructions

Cool casserole, then wrap casserole dish with plastic wrap, or carefuly transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to three days. You can also simply cover the entire dish with plastic wrap and pop it into the fridge.

Reheat leftover casserole by cooking in 350°F oven until heated through. (cover with foil) This should take about 20 minutes. Individual portions can be reheated in the microwave for one to two minutes.

Can I freeze Philly Cheesesteak Casserole?

Yes! This casserole freezes and reheats well. Cook casserole completely, then cool. Wap entire casserole dish in plastic wrap followed by a layer of aluminum foil. Freeze for up to three months. Thaw completely in the refrigerator, then reheat in 350°F oven until heated though.
