  • 1 and 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon, plus 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 (15 oz) can green beans, drained
  • 1 (10.75 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 and 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 to 3 cups of frozen tater tots
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

Step By Step Instructions

Cooked ground beef, onion and garlic mixture with Tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce being added to the meat.

STEP ONE – Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease an 8 or 9-inch baking dish and set aside.

STEP TWO – In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, along with the onion and garlic powder. Drain off any excess fat, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

STEP THREE – Stir the mixture as it cooks. You do not want it to stick to the bottom of the skillet. Reduce temperature to medium if necessary.

Cream of mushroom soup is spread on top of the beef mixture in casserole dish.

STEP FOUR – Spread the cream of mushroom soup over the meat mixture.

Green beans are sprinkled on top of the mushroom soup mixture in casserole dish.

STEP FIVE – Sprinkle the drained green beans on top of the soup mixture and season with a little salt and pepper.

STEP SIX – Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the green beans.

Frozen tater tots are place in an even layer on the top row of the cassrole dish.

STEP SEVEN – Finally top with the frozen tater tots in a single layer.
STEP EIGHT – Bake in 375°F for 35 to 40 minutes. Tater tots should be golden brown.
Serve immediately and enjoy! Bake time may vary. This casserole is ready when the tater tots are nicely browned and the cheese is melted.

For an extra-cheesy casserole sprinkle 1/2 cup of grated cheddar on top of the tater tot layer during the last 10 minutes of baking. Who doesn’t love a cheesy tater tot casserole!!?

Storage and Freezing

Store leftover casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave or warm larger portions in the oven.

To freeze before baking, assemble the casserole in a freezer-safe pan, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking as directed.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 
  2. Lightly grease an 8 or 9-inch baking dish and set aside. (casserol dish should be at least 2 inches deep)
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with onion and garlic powder. Cook the ground beef until it is completely cooked and no longer pink.  Drain excess fat
  4. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce.  Taste, then and add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Evenly spread the ground beef mixture in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Spread the cream of mushroom soup over the meat mixture. 
  7. Next, drain the green beans and sprinkle them on top of the soup mixture. Season the green beans with a little salt and pepper. 
  8. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top. 
  9. Finally top with the frozen tater tots in a single layer.
  10. Bake in 375°F for 35 to 40 minutes. Tater tots should be golden brown.
  11. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Storage: Cool casserole completely, then transfer to an airtight container. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave in 30 second intervals until heated through. 

How to freeze tater tot casserole

Freeze before baking – Follow instructions as directed, except use a freezer safe aluminum pan. Tightly wrap the pan with a layer or plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. 

To cook : Thaw the tater tot casserole in the fridge overnight and cook as directed. 

Freeze leftover cooked tater tot casserole: 

Place cooled leftover casserole in an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw completely before reheating.
