What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is a cross between a cake and a cobbler. They are made by simply dumping the ingredients into a baking dish, with no stirring required.

Dump cakes can be made with any flavor of cake mix and either fresh fruit or canned pie filling. The sky is the limit with flavor combinations.

The process begins with fresh fruit or canned pie filling being ‘dumped’ into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. The dry cake mix is then sprinkled on top of the fruit layer. The final step is melted butter that is poured over top of the dry cake mix. This is where the magic happens. No stirring, no mixing!! The dump cake is baked for less than one hour.

Some dump cakes are made with a different method of mixing room temperature butter with the cake mix, then sprinkling that mixture over top of the fruit filling. This results in a crumbly cobbler-like topping.

Most dump cakes are made in the oven but you can also make a crockpot dump cake.

How to make 3-ingredient chocolate cherry dump cake

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan (casserole dish) with cooking spray or grease with a light layer of butter.

Open both cans of cherry filling and spread out in the bottom of prepared baking dish. Smooth out evenly.

Cake mix spread on top of cherry pie filling in 9x13-inch baking dish.

Sprinkle dry cake mix on top of the cherry pie filling. I like to use clean hands and sprinkle it from the package.

Melted butter spread on top of cake mix in top of 9x13-inch baking dish.

Melt butter and pour evenly over top of cake mix. Don’t worry if a few patches of dry cake mix are poking through. They will get covered up during baking.

Transfer the baking dish to preheated oven. Bake in 350°F oven for 50 to 55 minutes. Remove and cool on wire cooling rack.

This chocolate cherry dump cake is delicious served with a dollop of whipped cream or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, spooned on top of the cake.

How to Store Dump Cake

Cover cooled dump cake with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can also transfer the dump cake to an airtight container. Let the cake cool completely, then cut and slide a spatula underneath carefully and transfer to the container.

Variations

Sprinkle 1 cup of white or dark chocolate chips on top of cake mix before pouring the butter over top of the mix.

If you love a cherry and almond flavor combination, you can stir in 1/2 teaspoon almond extract into the cherry pie filling before spreading it out in the baking dish.

Description

This tasty Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake is made with just canned cherry pie filling, cake mix and butter! No mixing and measuring needed, it’s made right in the baking dish! A sweet treat that’s one part cake and one part cobbler. It’s gooey and delicious and you’re going to love it!

Ingredients

Chocolate cake mix (15.25 ounces)

2 cans cherry pie filling

3/4 cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. Spread both cans of cherry pie filling into prepared baking dish.
  4. Dump (I like to scatter with clean fingers) the cake mix over top of the pie filling.  Try to add it in an even layer.
  5. Pour melted butter as evenly as possible over top of the cake. Don’t worry about a few powdery sections on top of the cake. The mixture will combine together as it bakes and it’s perfect normal to have a few dry spots. DO NOT STIR the butter into the cake mix.
  6. Bake in a 350°F oven for 50 to 55  minutes.

Notes
