Cake mix apple cobbler in white bowl with apples in the background. this recipe!

Fresh Granny Smith apples are the star in this easy apple dessert recipe. The method to this recipe is a bit different from my other delicious Apple Dump Cake which uses apple pie filling.

If this is you're first time making a cake mix cobbler, you're going to love how quick and easy this recipe is to put together. It's the perfect dessert if you're in a hurry and a great way to enjoy apples from a visit to the apple orchard in the fall!

If you love fall desserts, next time try my pumpkin pecan dump cake and cinnamon roll apple cobbler. Both are quick and easy, just like this apple dessert!

    Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe with text overlay.
    • Apples - we like to combine Granny Smith apples, combined with a few Honey Crisp apples. You can also use any other types of apple but stick to the ones that are firm and hold up well during baking.
    • Pecans - add flavor and crunch in this recipe.
    • Brown Sugar
    • Cinnamon
    • Cake Mix - you can use yellow, golden yellow, white cake mix.
    • Butter

    Substitutions

Cake Mix - you can use yellow cake mix, spice cake mix or white cake mix.

Apples - you can substitute two cans of apple pie filling in place of the fresh apples in the recipe. Then, you would omit adding the cinnamon.

Walnuts - may be substituted for the pecans.

    Step by Step Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray for baking.

Apple mixture in bottom of red 9x13-inch baking dish.

I like to use a combination of apples for all of my apple crisps and cobblers. For this recipe, I used Honey Crisp and Granny Smith apples. Delicious combination!

Peel and core the apples, then slice and dice them. I like to vary the sizes of the chunks and add some slices for a nice texture.

Next, in a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with ground cinnamon and brown sugar.

Spread apple mixture in the bottom of prepared baking dish.

Pastry blender in mixing bowl with cake mix and melted butter.

In a separate large mixing bowl, use a pastry cutter (or you can use clean hands) to combine the cake mix and melted butter.

The mixture should be crumbly and will clump together nicely together in small chunks. Sprinkle mixture on top of the apple layer.

Cake mix mixture and pecan mixture are crumbled on top of apples in baking dish.

Sprinkle pecans on top of cake mix layer.

Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes. The edges will be bubbly and the top will be a light golden brown.

Cake mix apple cobbler in white bowl with napkin in the background.

Transfer to wire cooling rack and cool for a few minutes before serving.

Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a lovely fall dessert!

    Variations

    • Sprinkle half a bag of caramel bits over top before baking.
    • Add ½ cup pecans to the apple mixture.
    • Drizzle with caramel sauce when serving for a Caramel Apple Dump Cake variation.

    Storage Instructions

Store cooled dessert wrapped in plastic wrap in refrigerator for up to four days.
