Substitutions & Variations
For a Salisbury steak recipe no mushrooms, simply do not use the mushrooms and follow the rest of the recipe as is.
What Can I Use Instead Of Worcestershire Sauce?
You can substitute it with soy sauce (or coconut aminos for a soy-free option) mixed with a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar for a similar umami flavor.
Can I Use Ground Turkey Or Chicken Instead Of Beef?
Yes, but since turkey and chicken have less fat, consider adding an extra tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and a teaspoon of olive oil to keep them juicy.
How To Make Salisbury Steak
Step One – In a bowl, mix the ground beef, ½ cup diced onion, breadcrumbs, and minced garlic until well combined. Form into four equal patties.
Step Two – Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step Three – In the same skillet, melt butter and add mushrooms and ½ cup diced onion. Sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
Step Four – Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme, then bring to a simmer.
Step Five – Return the patties to the skillet, covering them with the gravy. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
How Do I Prevent My Salisbury Steak Patties From Falling Apart?
Make sure to mix the beef mixture just until combined—overmixing can cause them to be too soft. Also, let the patties rest for a few minutes before cooking, and avoid flipping them too soon in the skillet.
Sandra’s Tips
- Brown the patties well before removing them from the skillet. This adds more depth to the gravy.
- Don’t over mix the ground beef mixture, as this can make the patties dense. Mix just until combined.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, let it simmer for a few extra minutes or add a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water).
- You can easily double this Salisbury steak recipe to feed a crowd at gatherings
Storage And Reheating Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Cooked patties and gravy freeze well. Cool completely, then store in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
Reheat gently (medium-low heat) in a skillet with a splash of beef broth to keep the gravy from drying out, stirring occasionally until heated through.
