Christmas Muddy Buddies Mix (Puppy Chow)

This easy Muddy Buddy Mix recipe is a much loved snack for a simple treat to whip up for parties, game nights, or the holidays. Puppy Chow can be made with or without the Christmas M&M’s. With a delicious peanut butter and chocolate coating this crunchy cereal snack mix is irresistible!

Christmas Puppy Chow

Making homemade muddy buddy is a cherished holiday tradition in many families and it’s great way to get the kids involved. Makes a great Christmas gift or stocking stuffer!

Combining a few sweet ingredients with Chex cereal, peanut butter and chocolate its easy to see why this is such a popular snack that everyone loves.

Add muddy buddies, puppy chow or reindeer chow depending on what you call them for fun holiday snacking this year and skip the chip aisle in the grocery store.

Muddy Buddy Ingredients

  • Chex Cereal – I used corn Chex also use rice Chex, chocolate Chex or Crispix cereal
  • Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips – or use white, milk or dark chocolate chips
  • Peanut Butter – I used creamy peanut butter or use almond butter and Nutella
  • Butter – I used unsalted butter but you can use salted butter if not adding pinch of salt
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Salt – add a pinch of salt is optional to balance the sweetness
  • M&M Candy – I used red and green holiday M&M’s but you can make it without them

Substitutions & Variations: I love this Chex recipe as it is so easy to customize with your favorite snacking treats. Add extra M&M’s and marshmallows, chopped nuts, crushed candy canes, sprinkles or pretzels depending on your tastes. Make cookies and cream puppy chow with crushed Oreo’s and white chocolate!

How To Make Muddy Buddy Mix Recipe

Step-by-step picture instructions for how to make puppy chow recipe.

STEP ONE – To a microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave for 30 seconds, and stir well.

STEP TWO – Microwave for 30 seconds more, and stir again. If not melted, microwave on 15 second increments and stir until smooth. Remove from the microwave and stir in vanilla extract, mixing well.

STEP THREE – Pour the chocolate mixture over the chex cereal, and toss to coat.

STEP FOUR – Divide the powdered sugar between two gallon storage bags.

STEP FIVE – Scoop the chocolate covered chex into the gallon bags, and shake well to coat the cereal in the sugar.

STEP SIX – Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment lined baking sheet, and allow to set for about 30 minutes.

STEP SEVEN – Before serving, add in M&M’s and toss if desired.

Storage Instructions

Store puppy chow in an airtight container or resealable bag at room temperature for up to 7 days. I prefer to store it in an airtight container cooled in the fridge for 10 to 14 days and sit for a couple of minutes at room temperate before serving.

Freeze muddy buddy mix in a freezer-safe container for 2 to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

9 cups chex cereal (we used corn chex)

1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1 tsp. vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
