Copycat Panera Mac & Cheese Recipe

Mac & cheese is the ultimate comfort food dinner isn’t it? We think so! It’s a favorite in our home and it may be a little unusual, but Grandma’s homemade beet pickles are a must to enjoy on the side with this mac and cheese!

This mac and cheese is made with simple ingredients and it is the perfect budget-friendly dinner to serve on busy weeknights.

You can enjoy this pasta recipe on its own or serve it as a side dish with ham, chicken or anything really!

Ingredients for the best mac and cheese recipe

  • 3 cups dry Small Shell Pasta
  • ¼ cup Butter
  • 3 tablespoons Flour
  • ½ teaspoon Mustard Powder
  • Salt & Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1 ¾ cups Milk
  • 2 cups Extra Sharp White Cheddar Cheese, freshly shredded
  • 4 ounces White American Cheese (about 6 slices)

How To Make White Cheddar Mac & Cheese

STEP ONE – Start by boiling water for the pasta and adding the pasta in when boiling, cook for 7-9 minutes or until al dente.

STEP TWO – While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter on medium to low heat, then whisk in the flour and spices to start the roux.

STEP THREE – Add the milk slowly, while continuing to whisk, the mixture should stay slightly thick the entire time.

STEP FOUR – Then add the cheeses until they are melted and turn to low heat.

STEP FIVE – Strain the pasta and add into the cheese mixture. Stir until all pasta is covered with the cheese sauce.

STEP SIX – Serve and enjoy!

Storage Instructions

Store leftovers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave, or on the stove, until thoroughly warm.
