Description

These Buttermilk Dinner Rolls are soft, fluffy and perfectly golden with a rich buttery flavor and tender crumb. They’re a delicious homemade dinner roll for family dinners, holiday meals and Sunday suppers, and that final brush of melted butter makes them even better served warm from the oven.

Ingredients

Units
  • 3/4 cup warm buttermilk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, for brushing

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the warm buttermilk, warm water, sugar and yeast. Let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes, until the yeast becomes foamy.
  2. Add the melted butter, salt, egg and 3 cups of the flour. Mix until a soft dough begins to form. Gradually add additional flour, about 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed until the dough is soft and manageable.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead the dough in a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook for 5 to 6 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Set it in a warm place and allow the dough to rise for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and arrange the rolls in a greased 9 × 13-inch baking dish.
  6. Cover the baking dish and let the rolls rise for another 30 to 45 minutes, until noticeably puffy.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake the rolls for 18 to 22 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
