Easy Cast Iron Skillet Apple Crisp Recipe


This old-fashioned recipe will warm your heart on a cool fall day. Apples cooked in cinnamon, brown sugar and butter topped with a crispy, chewy oatmeal topping come together so easily for this classic family favourite.


Apple Layer

6 medium apples, peeled and sliced

3 tbsp. butter

1/3 cup brown sugar

2 tsp. cinnamon

1/8 tsp. salt

Oat Topping

1 and 1/4 cups oats

2 tbsp. flour

5 tbsp. cold butter

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/8 tsp. salt


Apple Layer

1. In an oven-proof skillet, melt butter over medium heat.

2. Whisk in brown sugar, cinnamon and salt

3. Add apples and mix gently to coat the apples with the butter mixture.

4. Cook over low-medium heat for 7 minutes, then remove from heat. Mixture should be bubbly but not too much. 

Oat Layer

5. In a medium-sized mixing bowl combine oats, flour and salt. Mix well to combine.

6. Cut in the cold butter (I like to do this part by hand). 

7. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apple mixture in the oven-proof skillet.

8. Sprinkle brown sugar on top of the oat mixture.

9. Bake in 350 oven for 30 to 35 minutes. Serve warm with a topping of ice cream or whipped cream. May also be served cold. 

Cover with pan with plastic wrap or carefully transfer it to a storage container. It can be refrigerated for up to a week.



Optional Addition

Toast 1/4 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts for 4 to 5 minutes in 350F oven, then sprinkle on top of brown sugar and oat mixture before baking.
