Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Description

If you’re looking for the best sloppy Joe recipe, these Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are the answer! This is an easy weeknight meal that the whole family will love and as a bonus, it’s made from scratch.


Ingredients

8 slices Texas toast garlic bread (without cheese)

1 lb. ground beef (lean)

1 cup green pepper, diced

1 cup yellow onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tabelspoons tomato paste

1 can, 14 oz. tomato sauce

1 and 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon dry mustard

1 teaspoon chili powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.  Line a baking sheet with foil. 
  2. In a large skillet, brown ground beef with chopped onion, chopped green pepper and garlic until meat registers 160°F on meat thermometer.
  3. Add in tomato paste, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, dry mustard, chili powder, red pepper flakes (if using) salt and pepper.  Simmer over low-medium heat until thickened. This should take about ten minutes. 
  4. Meanwhile, toast the garlic Texas toast in 425°F oven to 8 to 10 minutes, turning over halfway through.(Check package instructions, some brands may suggest a lower temperature). You want the bread to be lightly toasted.  
  5. Spoon meat mixture on top of each slice of toasted bread as thickly as desired.  Top with shredded cheese. Change oven temperature to broil and broil for 1 to 2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.  

Notes

Substitutes: You can substitute an equal amount of ground turkey or chicken for this recipe. 

Storage: Store any leftover in a covered airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. I like to assemble them and layer them in an airtight container, ready for leftovers the next day. They reheat very well!

Reheating instructions: Reheat previously assembled sloppy joes (already on the toast with meat mixture) in the microwave for one to one and a half minutes (depending on the strength of your microwave). Next, set oven to broil and broil for one to one and a half minutes.
For unassembled sloppy joes, toast bread as per instructions above in step #4 and reheat the meat mixture in the microwave for two to four minutes, stirring every minutes to test.
