How to make Easy Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Have you been buying cans or jars of cranberry sauce? There certainly are some pretty tasty ones, however, once you make it homemade I'm positive that you will not want to go back to the canned variety! Trust me on this one - it's a game changer.

Ingredients needed to make the sauce

Homemade Cranberry Sauce is one of the easiest recipes with just a few basic ingredients. The main ingredient is fresh or frozen cranberries. They suddenly pop up in the produce section around Thanksgiving and Christmas and I always grab a few extra bags to freeze.

Granulated sugar is the second ingredient. These mildly tart berries need a bit of sweetening. the third ingredient is water. Yes, it's that simple.

You will see apples in the photo below and they are completely optional. The same goes for the cinnamon, ¼ tsp. of cinnamon will give it a more complex flavour. Personally, I usually make the cranberry-sugar-water recipe. Easy-peasy.

Cranberries, chopped apples, a glass of water and small red bowl of sugar sit on a pice of brown burlap. There are real maple leaves surround the photo and three cinnamon sticks.

This is a great recipe to make a few days before your big turkey dinner. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to ten days. It is one thing that you can scratch off your list early and you will have fresh, delicious, homemade cranberry sauce.

It's a great accompaniment to turkey dinner and equally as delicious the next day on a turkey sandwich or on the side with roast pork.

    Instructions for making the sauce

Cranberries, apples, water and sugar in a saucepan with a wooden spoon. The pot is sitting on a wooden cutting board.

    1. In a medium-sized heavy bottomed saucepan, combine water and sugar. Stir to dissolve sugar.

    2. Gradually bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

    3. Add cranberries and return to a boil, stirring occasionally.

    4. Reduce heat to medium and boil gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    5. Cool completely before storing in a refrigerator container.

    15 minutes start to finish!

    A gift from the heart

A gift from the kitchen is a gift from the heart. Package up an extra jar of sauce for a friend and loved one. With a small piece of fabric and twine, this gift is quick and easy to prepare for any time of year 🙂
