- Butter – you can use salted or unsalted butter for this easy recipe.
- Marshmallows – you can use the large ones or the small mini marshmallows in this recipe.
- Holiday Rice Krispie cereal (colored Rice Krispies or plain cereal)
- Powdered sugar – for the icing. You can also use the canned icing and pipe it though an icing bag!
- Milk – for mixing into the icing. I use 1% milk, or you can use 2% or whole milk as well.

How to make Rice Krispie treats as Christmas trees
This recipe has 4 easy steps:
1 – Melt the butter
2 – Add the marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat.
3 – Add the Rice Krispies and stir until they are well coated with the marshmallow mixture.
4 – Spread evenly into a 13×9-inch baking dish.
5 – Cut cooled square into tree shapes with cookie cutter (or use your favourite shape)! Prepare icing and pipe onto trees and add sprinkles!
Variations for Holiday Rice Krispie treats
You can make Rice Krispie treat with marshmallow fluff as a softer marshmallow treat.
You can use mini M&M’s, gum drops or any of your favorite Christmas candy for the decorations.
Also a chocolate Rice Krispie treat with chocolate icing is another great way to enjoy these Christmas cereal treats.
My top tips for making this Rice Crispy treat recipe
- Use room temperature butter for the best results
- Be patient when you’re melting the marshmallows. Trying to speed up the process by turning up the heat too high will results in hard Rice Krispie treats and we don’t want that!
- If you want a thicker Rice Krispie treat use a 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 baking dish
