Cheddar & Herb Soda Bread

This soda bread has no yeast and is ready in under an hour! Add your favourite herbs and cheese with great results.


2 cups all purpose flour

1-1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. butter

1 cup buttermilk

4 oz. cheddar cheese, shredded

1 egg

2-3 tbsp. fresh herbs, chopped


  1. Preheat oven to 425F
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt then add in cheese and herbs
  3. In a small bow, whisk together eggs and buttermilk
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture stirring until well combined being careful not to over mix
  5. On a floured surface, place the dough in the flour and cover all sides, turning over until all areas are covered in the flour
  6. Shape into a round loaf and slice an 'X' in the top with a sharp knife about 1/8" deep
  7. Transfer to parchment paper lined cookie sheet
  8. Sprinkle top with additional cheddar and herbs if desired.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cook on middle rack on oven to avoid over-browning.
  10. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter.
  11. Cool 10 minutes before slicing.
